The Foundation “For the Serbian People and State” ceremonially opened the exhibition “In Honor of Cyrillic” on March 26, 2026, at the Museum of Cyrillic in Bajina Bašta, reaffirming the importance of preserving the Serbian script as a fundamental pillar of national identity and cultural sovereignty.As the first guest exhibition hosted by the recently established Museum of Cyrillic, the event carried strong symbolic weight. At a time when cultural identities worldwide face increasing challenges, this exhibition underscored that Cyrillic is not merely a historical artifact, but a living symbol of continuity, resilience, and the spiritual heritage of the Serbian people.The opening brought together numerous guests, experts, and art enthusiasts. Addresses were delivered by Uroš Šuvaković, member of the Board of Directors of the Foundation “For the Serbian People and State”, Siniša Spasojević, Acting President of the Board of Directors of the Museum of Cyrillic and its founder, as well as the exhibition’s authors: painter Mirjana Maoduš and calligrapher Dušan Mišić.The exhibition presented works that bridge tradition and contemporary artistic expression, emphasizing the enduring relevance of Cyrillic in modern cultural discourse. Mirjana Maoduš, an internationally recognized artist, showcased pieces reflecting a deep connection between artistic creativity and cultural roots. Dušan Mišić, calligrapher and author of mural designs within the project “Through Serbia in Cyrillic”, exhibited his calligraphic transcriptions of the Miroslav Gospel, executed using medieval techniques, thereby linking Serbia’s rich past with its present cultural identity.Beyond the exhibition itself, a calligraphy workshop for children highlighted the importance of passing on cultural values to younger generations. Through creative engagement, children were introduced not only to the aesthetics of Cyrillic but also to its deeper significance as a cornerstone of national identity.The Director of the Foundation, Ljubica Bertović, emphasized that safeguarding Cyrillic is not merely a cultural task, but a matter of national responsibility.
“We are proud that distinguished artists such as Mirjana Maoduš and Dušan Mišić have entrusted us with presenting their works in the Museum of Cyrillic, marking its first guest exhibition. By doing so, we contribute to preserving Cyrillic through art. The Foundation will continue to actively promote the Serbian language, script, and cultural heritage, with a particular focus on educating young generations and strengthening national identity.”The strong public response to the exhibition reflects a growing awareness of the need to protect and promote Cyrillic in contemporary society.
